Combustion Engines

  • Technology well understood, as most cars have them
  • Methane from which hydrogen is made can be a renewable resource
  • Just water- clean

  • Less efficient
  • Nitrogen+ oxygen react in the engine to produce oxides of nitrogen+ water
  • Few fuel stations supplying hydrogen as a fuel
  • Needs recharging from the mains
  • Although hydrogen can be made from water, you still need energy from another source to make it
  • Hydrogen is hard to store safely- explosive
  • Need a special, expensive engine

Hydrogen is burnt in oxygen as a fuel, which drives the turbine
