Cognitive Behavioural Therapry

Advantages

  • Favoured over other therapies as it aims to get rid of the problem not just the symptoms.
  • EVANS (1992) CBT is a good therapy as well as drug therapy in preventing a relapse.
  • KELLER (2001) A combination of CBT and drug therapy is more effective than therapy just alone.
  • BUTLER (2006) The effectiveness depends on the disorder. When the problem is severe a combination of drugs and CBT are a good choice.

Disadvantages

  • You need to be committed and involved to a large extent although it has been used with children.
  • CBT is not suitable for people who have more complex mental health needs or learning difficulties.
  • Ethical Issues: Problems arise if the therapist is too directive it can lead to over dependence on them by client, it can then abuse their power over the client.

Evaluation

Other therapies usually attempt to explore and possibly resolve past issues, CBT whereas is mainly concerned with how you think and act which gives the client tools to deal with the current situations. Empowering the individual to take responsibility for his own thinking processes by monitoring, evaluating and altering self-defeating thought processes. It is as effective as treatment for depression and social anxiety. there is also evidence that the effects of CBT in depression may last longer than antidepressants. There are courses for the CBT to be treated during, over a small amount of weeks. Therefore it is then less time consuming, and more cost-effective. Results are then seen quicker and it allows more help for it to continue.
