Climate Change-causes and impacts

Causes

  • Scientific consensus that temperature rise is caused by human enhancement of the greenhouse effect
  • Burning fossil fuels- CO2 is a greenhouse gas
  • Deforestation- plants remove CO2 from the atmosphere
  • Farming- livestock produce methane, flood fields emit methane(rice paddies)

Effects

  • Artic ice decreased by 10-15% since 1950's
  • average global sea level set to rise by 0.09-0.88m between 1990-2100,flooding coastal and low lying areas
  • more extreme weather-droughts, floods, storms
  • spread of disease vectors e.g. Mosquitoes carrying Malaria
  • heat related illnesses and breathing problems increase
  • change in agricultural patterns
  • conflict over natural resources-water(could decrease by 10% in some areas)

Overall summary

What will happen to the UK...Winter rainfall increases(up to 35% in parts of western UK) and summer rainfall decreases(up to 49% in parts of southern England)Sea level expected to rise by 13-76 cm by 2095,affecting low lying and coastal regionsCrops adapted to warmer climates could be grown in southern England, dairy farming and arable crop farming  shift northwards
