Causes and Effects of Congestion Charging in London

Causes

  • Congestion in major cities is becoming to heavy
  • Pollution emissions are too high
  • Not enough sustainable transport is being used by the public

Effects

  • Traffic levels reduce by 21% - there were 65000 fewer cars a day.
  • 29000 more bus passengers
  • 12% increase in the number of cycle journeys into the zone.
  • 12% decrease in the number of nitrous oxide and particulates being emitted.

Overall summary

Congestion charging was put in place to help lower congestion and pollution emissions in the city, which would hopefully reduce London's impact on climate change and the greenhouse effect. After just 5 years, massive improvements have been seen with many people taking sustainable transport instead of cars, for example buses and bicycles. This has meant less emissions are being produced which is helping London become a greener city and slows the effects of climate change :)
