causes and effects of earthquakes in nepal

Causes

  • many people were asleep
  • people were asleep at a shallow depth of approx 8.2km
  • intense ground shaking + 352 after shocks
  • intense ground shaking
  • earthquake in epicenter
  • 352 aftershocks
  • avalanches at mount Everest
  • landslides
  • rice stores ruined

Effects

  • 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck nepal at 00:50(local time) on 28 april 2015 (primary)
  • intense ground shaking + 352 after shocks recorded (primary)
  • 8,841 dead and 16,800 injured (primary)
  • 26 hospitals destroyed and over 50% of schools as well (would have been more casualties if earthquake occurred during school hours (primary)
  • entire villages flattened (primary)
  • historic buildings and temples were destroyed including Dharahara tower (primary)
  • left more than 1 million people homeless (secondary)
  • killed 19 people and impact on adventure tourism (secondary)
  • blocked the Kali Gandaki river 90 miles N.W of Kathmandu causing potential flooding (secondary)
  • causing flood shortages and loss of income (secondary)

Overall summary

overall, i think that primary effects are more significant than secondary effects simply because it causes a lot of damage for example due to the earthquake and the after shocks 8,841 died and 16,800 people were injured. Whereas, secondary effects can be more significant because it usually topples into a domino effect e.g. rice stores ruined = food shortages and because rice could be something people sold to generate income it would be stopped due to the earthquake so there would be no source of income, however, i do agree that primary effects are more significant than secondary effects.
