Causes
- Global warming- A rise in the average temperature of the Earth's surface due to increase in greenhouse gases such as CFC, water vapour, nitrogen oxides, CO2 which traps heat in the atmosphere- Greenhouse effect. Recently, global warming is caused by human cause eg. fossil fuels.
- Greenhouse effect- Traps the heat in the atmosphere which warms up the Earth's surface, eg. Methane, CFC, Nitrous oxide, water vapour. This could enhance the greenhouse effect. - IMPORTANT: Keeps the global temp. at a level that can sustain life
- Could affect organisms metabolic rate- enzymes have an optimum temp. (increased activity up to 28*C. Some enzymes can denature if it is above 28*C so it disrupts the metabolic rate
- 'Carbon Neutral' - Burning wood does not add to the amount of CO2 into the atmosphere (no net increase). The CO2 in the plant is roughly equal to CO2 out
- Rate of decay increases- Increased enzyme activity which means more CO2 released due to MICROBIAL RESPIRATION so more CO2 into the atmosphere= Greenhouse effect and Global Warming

Effects
- Peat Pollen- deeper the layer= the older the layer. Can use radio carbon to date the peat
- Could lead to climate change, flooding
- Methane= Paddy field, landfill sites, decomposition of organic material
- CO2= respiration, combustion of fossil fuels which consists of Carbon containing substances, burning forests
- CFC's= Fridges, aerosols
- Nitrous oxide= car engines, forests fire , nitrate fertilisers
- More CO2 turned into woods therefore CO removed from atmosphere so less Greenhouse gases released
