  • it has lots of industry including Samsung and Wal-mart
  • It has created lots of jobs
  • industries have increased the wealth of the area.. in 1980, the area had a GDP of $8 million. In 2001 it was $100 billion

Effects

  • Air pollution- from power plants burning coal creating sulphur dioxide and nitrogen which cause acid rain
  • Pollution from factory waste and untreated sewage- the river water is only ok for farming land and no drinking
  • The Pearl River Delta drains into the South China sea, which is endangering species like Chinese White Dolphin

Overall summary

Management strategies= 1) the government is spending $7.1 billion to help clean up the river, e.g. by building 30 new sewage works 2) The Pearl River Delta air quality management plan aims to reduce Sulphur dioxide emitted from power plants by 40% by using natural gas instead of coal.
