Advantages

  • Stops people committing crimes again
  • Costs a lot for offenders to be in prison
  • 'Eye for an eye'
  • Gives victims family revenge and closure
  • People who are too dangerous to be imprisoned must be stopped
  • Not instant death - suffers
  • Duty to create a just society
  • Shari'ah law permits death penalty on severe cases

Disadvantages

  • Innocent people can be sent to death
  • Does not give the option of redemption
  • 'Thou shall not kill'
  • Two wrongs don't make a right
  • Jesus taught not to seek revenge
  • Sanctity of life
  • Only God should take away life
  • God is merciful so we should be too
  • Importance of reconciliaiton

Evaluation

Religious believers do not generally agree with capital punishment as it is the killing of a life and all life has been made sacred by GodHowever, Muslims believe it is their duty to create a just society and so capital punishment is accepted on the grounds of the Shari'ah law
