Buddhist meditation is just a form of therapy.’ Assess this view

Advantages

  • ‘NHS 'paying more attention in the present moment to your own thoughts and feelings'
  • Mindfulness based stress reduction by Jon Kaboot-Zin in 1970, where you do meditation which causes left shift meaning you have to face stress head on
  • Getting over cravings is a form of therapy in itself
  • Google was rated the number one employer and they send thousands of employies on these mindfulness courses
  • Samatha meditation takes one to a higher jharna which again could be a form of therapy

Disadvantages

  • Meditation is not necessary just therapy, it helps you come over hiderances (cravings)
  • One person tried a mindfulness course and it made their anxiety so much worse
  • Its for capitalism, it's not therapy, its created to keep us going, we only look after our mental health when it effects a company, then we are sent on a mindfulness course then work even harder

Evaluation

To conclude, although I think meditation is just a form of therapy, this is not necessarily a bad thing!
