Biological Pest Control

Advantages

  • Highly specific to one pest
  • A long term solution if equilibrium is established.
  • Inexpensive over the long term
  • No environmental contamination
  • Can be used in a glasshouse.

Disadvantages

  • Only a few working examples ( Agents not known for most pests)
  • Expensive to research and a high level of skills and initial set up costs.
  • Agent may become a pest itself
  • Frequent input needed to maintain population balance
  • Needs to be large scale

Evaluation

Introducing a natural predator = INTRASPECIFIC competition to reduce the pest population. Agent/Predator kills and eats the target/pest. Results in negative feedback, as the predator/prey populations fluctuate. NOT LOOKING TO ERADICATE THE PEST. PREDATOR WOULD STARVE - DIE. PEST RE-INVADES.
