Advantages

  • Imitate accent and dialect
  • Learn pragmatic aspects of lang (politeness)
  • Repeat lang and incorporate it in their own

Disadvantages

  • Can form sentences they've never heard
  • Hear ungrammatical spoken lang but can still learn correct form
  • Don't seem to respond to correction
  • Aren't negatively reinforced or always corrected for incorrect grammar
  • Corrections may slow down development
  • Imitate but do they understand meanings?

Evaluation

The 'fis' phenomenon suggests children hear and understand the correct pronunciation but can't produce it themselves. Also, the research supporting behaviourism was conducted on rats and pigeons, and not humans.
