Advantages

  • FUNCTIONALISM - Friends can provide function groups for single parents.
  • FUNCTIONALISM - Single/Surrogate/homosexual couples can opt in for reproductive technologies such as IVF and Test Tube

Disadvantages

  • FUNCTIONALISM - Parsons' view is sexist. Females go to work.
  • FUNCTIONALISM - Ignores family diversity - little reference to lone parent families, cannot be applied to other families.
  • MARXISM - Emotional support helps people to accept inequalities and capitalism is unjust.
  • NEW RIGHT - Marxists would criticise solutions to give money to the nuclear family.
  • MARXISM - The function of accepting inequalities is lost
