Ancient Rome pre-conquest Britain forwards or backwards

?

Ancient Rome pre conquest views on britain (forwards or backwards)

Advantages

  • large mining facilities = Great Orne copper mine
  • working economy = Salacome wreck  is an example of international trade also theres and eliet class
  • respect for dead = buried = Scatborne iron age cemetary argues against caesar's claims that pre-conquest gb is backward/ aboriginal
  • wetwang woman = celtic britain more forward as women are highly valued in society and can rule tribes  as queens etc. but strabo and ceaser try to argue that aspects such as this arnt foward.

Disadvantages

  • limited/little variation in celtic diet (mainly oats and rye)
  • use of rituals = sudden farm man 600bc = tributes and human sacrifice/ extreme religious beliefs
  • no centralised government = tribal britain ruled by many kings and queens ALSO was divided and unity was incomprehensible = seen when trinovantes help rome in future to wipe of cativalounes tribe
  • druids = deal warrior = human sacrifice and may not exist rome may have made up to invent backwardness but = Druid of colchester may disprove this
  • Lyn Cervig bach slave chain demonstrates brits have slaves and shows their barbaric. as Rome have slaves but they may win their freedom
  • cicro states how 'there is no prospect of booty'

Evaluation

Overall romes pre conquest views on britain may be said to be true however there are some aspects which dispute this as the argument shows that britains use of druids and rituals and other factors such as large internal conflict due to numerous tribes and kings and the suggestion of no centralised government all show caesars reasons for wanting to invade britain but evidence such as wetwang woman show in some aspects britain is more forward than what is thought by rome.and to me Caesar is display doubt in romes mind so the eventual invasions may appear valid.
