An Inspector Calls - Contrasts between 1912 and 1945

?

1912                                                                                     1945

Similarities

  • The World Wars had not happened. Mr Birling was wrong by predicting it would not happen.
  • The classes were clearly separated
  • Women had a very low place in society
  • There was no need to change society

Differences

  • The Second World War had ended and the people were recovering and repairing damage.
  • The class difference has changed because of the war
  • Many women were more valued because of the war effort
  • Many people wanted change in society because they required a social change

Overall comparison

I have looked at the differences between life in 1912 and 1945. This is when the play is set and when the play was first performed. These are contrasting and this is because Priestley chose these particular years. I think that studying 'An Inspector Calls' has widened my horizon in terms of looking how life was because I find it interesting that an author can chose these dates and this will reflect the whole of soiciety before and after the World Wars.
