Alexander Fleming, Howard Florey and Ernst Chain

?

Who?

What did they do?

  • Alexander Fleming was a Scottish physician (1881 - 1955).
  • Howard Florey was an Australian pathologist (1898 - 1968).
  • Ernst Chain was a German biochemist (1906 - 1979).
  • Flemming found an antispetic that could kill most bacteria, however he wanted to find one for Staphylococcal. In 1928, he saw that on one of his experimental dishes a mould grew on the dish of Staphococcoli. Around the mould the bacteria had stopped growing. He had found Penicillium notatum. It produced a substance called Penicillin. However he could not prove his theory.
  • Florey and Chain resumed his work nearly thirty years later. They made a project to produce a large amount of Penicillin.  They couldn't get a grant from the British government so Florey went to America. They gave a grant when they joined the war.

What factors helped them?
