What did they do?

  • Fleming was a Scottish physician (1981- 1955).
  • Florey was an Australian pathologist (1898 -1968).
  • Ernst Chain was a German biochemist (1906 -1979).
  • Fleming saw hundreds of soldiers die during World War 1 and noticed that wounds were often infected by Staphylococcal. He searched for a cure and found an antiseptic that only killed certain bacteria. When he was clearing away some dishes he noticed a mould had grown and the Staphylococci around it had stopped growing. This was Penicillium notatum.
  • It produced a substance called Penicillin. However, he could not prove his discovery.
  • Florey and Chain developed Fleming's theory. They set out to start a mass production of Penicillin.
