Advantages and Disadvantages of Vaccinations

Advantages

  • Protects individuals against disease
  • Prevents epidemics and pandemics
  • Prevents you spreading the disease to others
  • Prevents the potential greater cost treating the infected patients

Disadvantages

  • Not guaranteed to work or provide 100% protection
  • Possible side effects
  • Costs to the NHS or to the individual
  • Can be unpleasant or painful
  • Booster injections can be inconvenient

Evaluation

Vaccination is an effective way to become immunised against diseases, however vaccination can be unpleasant and does not offer complete immunity. There may also be a few short/long term side effects to some vaccinations.

The advantages and disadvantages of vaccinations is often set as part of a longer question in GCSE Biology. Using a table to focus your thoughts is a good idea. This table is a simple summary of the arguments for and against vaccination which could be  used alongside a set of sample examination questions on this subject.
