Advantages and Disadvantages of the DTM

Advantages

  • Good generalised picture of how a population changes over time.
  • Easy to compare a country's demographics with the DTM.
  • You can forecast what a country's population may look like in the future - good for government planning of policies.

Disadvantages

  • DTM was created data from MEDC's meaning the DTM is not valid worldwide.
  • DTM didn't orginally have a Stage 5.
  • DTM doesn't take in factors like levels of education and role of women which all affect the DTM.
  • The populations in different countries change in different ways.
  • Extreme poverty limits population growth and prevents LEDC's mooving through any stages.
  • The DTM can't predict when each country will reach each stage and for how long they will be in that stage.
  • DTM doesn't consider the effect of migration.
  • Other factors - population policies, diseases and civil wars.

Evaluation

The DTM is a good resource for genraliseing what a country's population will look like over time. and it is used by many countries for policy planning. However there are more disadvantages than advantages as the DTM isn't very detailed in its analisis of a country's population and what has caused it to look like that.
