Advantages and Disadvantages of Networking

Advantages

  • Hardware such as printers, hard disk, etc can be shared.
  • Software and data can be easily shared and transferred between the machines.
  • A user can access their files from any computer on the network.
  • Managing files can be done automatically and access to certain facilities such as the internet can be controlled.

Disadvantages

  • Extra equipment such as network cards, cables, and servers are needed.
  • If the network breaks down then you won't be able to access your data or run your programs
  • Users have less control over how the computers are set up.
  • There's an increased risk of being infected by viruses from other people's machines.

Evaluation

There are the same amount of advantages and disadvantages but whether a network is good or bad depends on the reason for the network, who is going to use it and what they are going to use it for. Some companies might find networking useful such as Police Departments as they can access all the data on suspects through their previous criminal history which is stored on the database on all the computers. But for a small company with only a few computers installing a network may be a waste of time and money.
