Advantages of disadvantages of creatine monohydrate

Advantages

  • Aims to provide ATP (energy)
  • Replenishes phosphocretine (PC) stores
  • Allows the ATP-PC system to last longer
  • Muscle mass is improved

Disadvantages

  • Side effects include muscle cramps, diarrhoea, water retention, bloating and vomiting
  • Aerobic performance is hindered
  • Mixed evidence to show the benefits

Evaluation

Overall, creatine monohydrate helps provide ATP, replenish PC and can help the ATP-PC system to last longer. However, it hinders aerobic performance by delaying it for longer and can cause bloating, vomiting and muscle cramp as some of the side effects.
