Advantages and disadvantsges of glycogen loading

Advantages

  • Increases glycogen storage
  • Increases glycogen stores in the muscle
  • Fatigue is delayed
  • Increases endurance capacity

Disadvantages

  • Water retention which results in bloating (carbo-loading phase)
  • Heavy legs (carbo-loading phase)
  • Problems with digestion (carbo-loading phase)
  • Weight increase (carbo-loading phase)
  • Irritability (depletion phase)
  • Training programme has to be altered due to the lack of energy (depletion phase)

Evaluation

Overall, glycogen loading can help to increase endurance capacity and increase glycogen stores in the muscles, which helps to delay fatigue. However, it causes heavy legs, digestion problems and increased weight in the carbo-loading phase and can also cause irritability in the depletion phase.
