ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF RELATIVE POVERTY

Advantages

  • Broadens what poverty is really like- lacking other needs which are not a physical necessity
  • Marxists- impossible to eradicate poverty- as some people such as proleteriats will be worse off than others- so therfore in relative poverty
  • Poverty line- agreed international measure- used throughout EU

Disadvantages

  • Culturally restricted-can only be used within one society becuase everyone in different cultures has a different standard of living (relative poverty in one culture might seem like absolute to another)
  • Marxists- measures inequality but in a capitalsit society inequality will always exist
  • Majority of people in UK- have higher standard of living
  • Definition of poverty- not fixed- poverty line in UK higher than in India
