Advantages and disadvantages of random sampling

Advantages

  • Random sample is more likely to be representative of the population, provided the sample is large enough
  • Choice of members of the sample is unbiased

Disadvantages

  • A full list of the whole population is needed
  • A large sample size is needed

Evaluation

A random sample is one in which every number of the population had an equal chance of being selected. A random sample is fair or unbiased and, if it is large enough, it is more likely to be representative of the population.
