Advantages and Disadvantages of Plywood

Advantages

  • Economic to use
  • Uses the whole of the tree
  • Can be used as a basic material that can be veneered
  • Good dimensional stability
  • Comes in large sheets
  • Can be shaped into a curve using a former

Disadvantages

  • Surface finish is not good
  • Edge is not always good
  • Visible flaws
  • Delamination if material becomes wet or damp (layers come apart)

Evaluation

Plywood (or any other laminated board, such as blockboard and lamin board) is good to use as a material which will be purely used for function in a dry environment, where form doesn't need to be taken into account.
