4.2-Churchill's Relations with Roosevelt

Similarities

  • Both believe in democracy and both are Right Wing,
  • Churchill has an American mother,
  • He did speaking tours around USA in his Wilderness Years from 1929-1939,
  • Lend Lease Act-The USA helped GB financially when no-one else would,
  • Atlantic Charter- shows they both support and uphold democratic values,
  • Churchill was the 1st Prime Minister to address the Congress in 1941,
  • Churchill stayed at the White House,
  • Churchill persuaded Roosevelt to agree on the Mediterranean Strategy in the Summer of 1941 despite Stalin demanding a second front,
  • Casablanca Conference 1943-Churchill gives Roosevelt his only painting from WW2,
  • Churchill supported Roosevelt over de Gaulle despite his underlying respect for de Gaulle,
  • Churchill genuinely upset about Roosevelt's death in 1945,

Differences

  • Churchill forgot first meeting with Roosevelt in 1918,
  • Lend-Lease Act-Britain get 50 battleships which were due to be scraped and US gets use of naval bases in West Indies-unfair deal,
  • Atlantic Charter-They have different views on democracy. Churchill-Believes it is a promise against fascism and communism, Roosevelt-Thinks it applies to the Empire and allowing colonies freedom,
  • 1943 Mediterranean Strategy fails which causes a difference between them after Churchill persuaded Roosevelt to support him and delay a second front,
  • Tehran Conference 1943-Big 2 1/2, Roosevelt and Stalin meet without Churchill and they decide to invade France, D-day 1944,

Overall comparison

Churchill described his relationship with Roosevelt as a "special relationship", suggesting they had a good relationship for wartime generals and more evidence supports this statement then doesn't,
