Ventilation keeps a fresh supply of molecules on one side of the exchange surface (the alveoli). So more diffusion takes place due to the steep concentration gradient which is being maintained:

Ventilation maintains:

  • High concentration of oxygen in the alveoli (so oxygen will diffuse into capillaries from the alveoli)
  • Low concentration of carbon dioxide in the alveoli (so carbon dioxide will diffuse out of capillaries, into the alveoli)
