Themes used:

  • Remembrance, - The dead being uncovered in the field and pictures relating back to the battle.
  • Death and Loss, - Death because 'twenty men buried in one long grave' Loss meaning two things - Loss of life and 'Absent tongues' 
  • Suffering - 'Socketed heads titled back at an angle' - imagery of suffering in the battle.
  • Consequences - How the battle affected the world - loss of life basically

Techniques used:

  • Range of tenses - Poet relates back to 'now' to remind us it affects today.
  • Personification - Earth standing guard.
  • Strong Imagery - To do with all the body parts.
  • Punctuation for effect - The first dash after 'farmers found them -' to make the reader pause and think.
