the doppler effect is the effect you get with sound, a fire engine for example, you hear a higher pitched sound as it comes towards you and a lower pitch sound as it travels away from you. this happens because the sound waves are being compressed as the fire engine comes towards you creating shorter wavelength and a higher pitched sound, and the sound waves are stretched out as it travels away from you causing a longer wavelength. hope this helps :)
