In recent years there has been a move to integrated coastal management. This means that sections of the coast are managed as a whole, rather than individual towns and villages. This move has happened because coastal engineers nowh realise that action in one place affects another. 

Sediment moves along the coast between the beach, cliffs and sea in sediment cells. Each cell operates between physical barriers e.g. estuary/headland. This means in theory sediment will stay in its cell.
