The atomic number of an atom is the number of protons or electrons

The atomic number of an atom is the number of PROTONS and NOT the number of electrons. proton and electron numbers are the same so you're probably thinking why does it matter, but when an atom is ionised (gains/loses electrons) the number of electrons change but the number of protons stay the same. DON'T make the mistake of saying that the atomic number is either the number of protons/electrons.
