What is the advantage of root hair cells dying off and regrowing nearer the tip? And the advantage of the lignin in xylem vessels breaking down?

If they grow further to the tip then a higher surface area is covered as they are more spaced out and so more water and minerals can be obtained. Not sure about the lignin breakdown though as it provides more strength.
