There are a variety of definitions ..

DEFRA, UK: 'Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs ...'

US Department of Energy: '...developing the built environment while considering environmental, responsiveness, resource efficiency, and community sensitivity.'

Other: 'Actions and processes which minimise negative consequences for the environment and ecosystems and promote human wellbeing'

Take your pick!

sustainable : able to be sustained for an indefinite period without damaging the environment, or without depleting a resource
