what is inflation ?

I am asked to make a presentation explaining what excatly inflation is and it's importance to a country

I don't know very much, but basically it's the price of things going up.

it's important for banks, etc deciding on interest rates.

sorry this isn't a brilliant explanation...

I learned this definition when i did GCSE Economics: 'A sustained rise in average price level over a period of time'.
