What is General Studies?

General studies A level is compulsory in my 6th form, but what do you actually learn in this subject? I've heard that it's not very useful so why do 6th forms make you take it?

I did General Studies in my first year and there are 2 domains that you need to learn, 1 is maths and science based and the other is society. I had to attend al lectures but i got into the exam and my college didnt teach me anything linked to the exams. It was a waste of my time and also most universities dont accept general studies, which means they dont accept their UCAS point either, so its pretty useless
