What effect does nitrogen gas have on the membranes of root hair cells?

A group of barley seedlings was grown from seed in a culture solution. Pure nitrogen was bubbled through this solution. Nitrogen is not harmful to seedlings.
What does the nitrogen being bubbled through the solution do to the membranes of the root hair cells?
I really have no idea. This is unlike any other question we have had in this topic. I'm thinking as the question states that "Nitrogen gas is not harmful to seedlings", that maybe it does nothing, but surely that's too easy?
Any help would be much appreciated. Many thanks.
