Peroxide means 'per oxide', as in there is one atom of an element per oxygen atom. For example: Hydrogen Peroxide.

The formula for Hydrogen Peroxide is H2O2, and as you can see, there is one atom of hydrogen for every oxygen atom. The ratio of hydrogen atoms to oxygen atoms is 1:1
