What books/material to read for veterinary medicine?

Does anyone know what books or materials to read up on for getting into veterinary medicine? What do you have to know to do well at interview?

This is a good website about current vet news. http://www.mrcvs.co.uk/en/index.php . Defra is a good website and the New Scientist website is also good.

If you learn or see anything interesting or unusual when doing work experience, do background research on it so you can mention it in your PS and if it comes up at interview then you can go into detail. If you help vaccinate on farms, kennels or your own pets, look up what the vaccines are for and a bit about the disease.

Those are just some ideas! Hope they help!

Thanks, I just don't know how to sound intelligent about the subject at interview :/
Have you had any more interviews or news on places for uni?

I have an interview at Liverpool in March!! So excited as it is my favourite! I havent heard anything from Edinburgh but have been rejected from Nottingham.

Dont worry about interviews yet! Work experience is more important at the moment and then over the summer you will have your PS to worry about!

As if Nottingham rejected you! And well done about Liverpool!! I am getting really nervous for September because I need to have done really well in AS, have loads of work experience, have a beyond brilliant personal statement and ace the interview! How do you cope with all the pressure!! The competition is too much and I don't think I'll be able to stand out or anything.

TBH I don't really know how I cope! Im generally quite chilled out.My mum is probably more worried about it all than I am.

Don't let it get to you. You never know unless you just go for it and you might be suprised! My college were really helpful when it came to PS. Start putting ideas together during the summer and it will slowly come together! I hated writing my personal statement but was really pleased with the end result!

How do you even start a PS without sounding like everyone else? I'm definitely stressed about the PS! Have no idea how to sound original and what to include and everything!

Try and think of reasons why you want to study vet med and not just 'i love animals' and 'i love science' as the unis have heard it all before. Or what made you want to become a vet (though try to avoid 'ever since blah, blah, blah happened to my pet...')

My structure was like this:

  1. Why vet med
  2. Work experience over a couple of paragraphs
  3. A levels
  4. Other activities eg DofE, volunteering, hobbies and relating skills learnt from those back to vet med
  5. Conclusion

You only have 4000 characters/ 47 line so it has to be concise and to the point. The student room has lots of help and some examples of PS.

hope this helps!

Thanks so much! I just have no idea for the starting sentence without sounding boring or cliche.
