I am studying german ab initio and would like to have some basic rules to follow when constructing a sentence in present and past.

1. "Verb 2nd". Example: Ich spiele Fußball.

2. Keep the verb 2nd. Example: Am wochenende, spiele ich Fußball.

3. Modal verbs send the second verb to the end. Example: Ich werde nach Deutschland fahren.

Modal verbs = Muss, Soll, Kann, Will, Mag, Darf.

4. Time, Manner, Place. Example: Am Wochenende, gehe ich mit meinen Freunden ins Kino.

5. Subordinatng conjunctions send the verb to the end. Example: Ich schwimme, weil ich sportlich bin.

Subordinating conjunctions: Wenn, Nach dem, Damit, Bevor, Bis, Als, Ob, Obwohl, Dass, Weil.

6. If you have the sent the verb to the end, the next clause will start with a verb. Example: Als ich zehn Jahre alt war, lernte Mutter meinen Stiefvater kennen.

1. Find the verb. Example: Machen

2. To make the verb in to the past participle, take off the ending. Example: Machen = Mach

3. Add ge- to the front and -t or -en to end. Example: Gemacht

4. Send the verb to the end. Example: Sie haben in den Ferien viel gemacht

I hope this helps :) I am not sure if I have got the perfect tense stuff right, but hopefully the rest helps :D
