Sorry, but I think you've made a mistake. You've confused greater jihad and lesser jihad. Greater jihad is the struggle of oneself, to overcome their ego, desires and lower self and overall purification of the heart whereas lesser jihad is the going out to battle with the intention of fighting for Allah Almighty.

God teaches that Muslims should pray and ask for forgiveness to help them from suffering. WAR : Lesser and greater jihad

Lesser jihad : internal jihad striving to become a better muslim

Greater jihad: Going to war in the name of god

However for Greater jihad there are certain rules that the muslim must follow before starting jihad --- a bit like 'just war theory' in christianity
