What is meant by boundary, media and how can you tell if there is a crack in a piece of metal for example?

media = plural for medium, which means state or level of an object (imagine going through a crack, one second the ultrasound is on a solid, next second, its on air, which is where the crack is)

We call this gap the boundary.

You can look for cracks in a object, when emitting ultrasound waves/radiation. the waves/radiation, are reflected by the medium, and not by the boundary!

Understood?

transmit aunltrasound wave through the peice of metal, and the wave is partly reflected back that is where the crack is most likely to be.

Boundary is the gap between two materials which causes the wave to partly reflect back. Btw im not sure about the proper definition for the boundary. Hope this helps.
