Is the code of xenia used by the people [in the days the doyssey is set in] because they want to gain favour of the gods or something????
i don't think that's right? why did the people in those day abide why the code of xenia [hospitality] ?
The code of xenia was used by people in Homer's time because it was part of their custom/way of life. Yes they did do it to gain favour of the Gods as Zeus was god of many things including xenia. It was the belief that strangers visiting a greeks home could be a God in disguise, therefore if they were inhospitable there could be a chance of severe punishment if it was a God. thats what my teacher taught me anyway :)
that's really clever, i never thought of it like that! and now i guess there's a reason to it all now as well!
thanks! that really helped!
