redshift is when a galaxy is moving away from us at such high speed the wavelength appears to increase, making the light appear red. there is also blueshift, the same principle apart from the galaxy is moving towards ours and the wavelength appears to decrease, making the light appear blue. hope this helps :)

Red shift is bascially when a galaxy is moving away from us the wavelength of light gets in some ways stretched therefore increasing its wavelength therefore shifiting it to the red side of the spectrum. This shows that the universe is expanding because the light received from another galaxy has shifted to the red meaning the universe is going for a "big yawn" (i think this is wot it is called)

There is also a blue shift which is opposite to red shift. This is because the wavelength is becoming squashed indicating that the galaxy is moving closer therefore as an extended answer the universe has stopped expanding and is now heading for a "big crunch"!!!

Beelal >> yuee nooee gamma rays is that on the red end of tha spectrum or the opposite?

Posted: 07-06-12 13:28 by в

Gud question baaaaayyyy!!!!! Gamma rays is at the end of the spectrum way past blue (the colours are for light only !!!!) So remember, this red shift and blue shift is due to the distortion of LIGHT  because if we send light to another galaxy, a  different coloured light might be emitted!

Hope i helped ====> but gamma is way past the blue spectrum as its wavelength is so small !!!!

So Gamma rays are nearer the red end of tha spectrum

Thank yueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for saving my lyf once agen! XD

lol no on the blue side !!!!!!  remember this gimic ===> red side of spectrum has longer wavelength, how do u know this becuase the one b4 it is infra RED which has a longer wavelength!!! Gamma has a smaller wavelength n therefore cannot be red !!!!!!!

Galaxies further away have the biggest red shift (they are moving the fastest) - the bigger the increased wavelength

HI i did astronomy gcse

basically, red shift is the radiation we can detect if a galaxy is moving away from us.

All stars emit light. If we look at the spectrum of the light (e.g. if we make it go through a prism) we see black lines. These are there because some of the light is absorbed by elements in the outer layers of the stars. The are called absorption lines.

If we compare light from nearby galaxies with light from galaxies much further away we can see a difference. The black lines are shifted towards the red end of the spectrum. Their wavelength is bigger than it should be. What does this mean?

Hey Zoe McPhie i just came across your page and i freaking love the fact that you have set yourself such high targets and bet you will meet them without a doubt! i admire dedicated people such as yourself and wish i was like that!

Wish you the best in the future and for tomorrow if you get any results! xo

Thankyou so so much! And they were the targets I was set by the school but I am determined to get them, and I got my year 10 results on Thursday, 4 A*'s and 3 A's but I got full marks in History (Medicine) and English Lit and Lang, so I was really pleased, but thanks aw that's made my day!***
