one of the advantages would be that with a girl gang, they might be more willing to cooperate with someone who wants to share their way of life. So access could be more easier than if it were lets say a boys' gang... another advantage is that the researcher would be able to get validity through involvement, because as Interpretivists argue; by experiencing the life of the group first hand, the researcher is able to get close to the girls' lived reality and gain a deeper understanding of their meanings. This produces uniquely valid qualitative data.

A disadvantage, however, is the practical limitation of the field-work being time-consuming and it could even take years to complete. It also produces large amounts of qualitative data which may be hard to analyse and categorise. Another disadvantage is the fact that this qualitative data may not be reliable. because unlike structured methods, participant observation is not a standardised and systematic approach. Therefore, we cannot guarantee that if a different researcher repeats the method they'd get the same results as participant observation is mostly based on personal skills and characteristics.

There's loads more advantages and disadvantages, they're just a few. Hope its helped :)
