what're your views on the matter?

i think it should be an illegal offence because voter apathy is disguting at the minute. and the turnout to elections are horrifically low.  how can democracy be successful if the right candidateisnt selected because 60% of people didnt turn up

Some people might argue, that not voting general election being an illegal offence is just going way to extreme because your putting pressure on people to vote. As a result, when people are pressured to vote they will more than likely choose a person either based on who people are voting the most for or just any random canditate. The person they vote isn't likely to be the person they wish, as they are just voting for the sake of it. The voting wouldn't be really accurate,

I believe becuase some will vote for the sake of it. thats just one of my view.. but then i agree on the opposing side as well.. il like this topic :)

but the thing is just becaus they have to vote it dont mean they are pressured

ahh. then i agree with you.

there should be more diversity in candidates though.

that may lead to an increase in interest?

yh, but some might not want to vote for either religious reasons or maybe just personal reasons. For example, some people in my religion (Islam) believe that were not allowed to vote, and therfore forcing them into vote makes them uncomfortable in this situation and therefore they feel they have been forced / pressured.

yeah true...

but the thing is people have months before the election so they wont feel pressured and the govt can make it easier by doing postal and text votes

EVERYONE. QUICK. VOTE GREEN! :D

haha dont vote green :) conservatives

lol.. i like debating ;)

well said, but to be honest even if not voting is an illegal offence, there will still be people who wouldn;t vote. okay now..

On the other hand, I think not voting should be an illegal offence because people should be encouraged to make important decisions like this. Also, voting for a canditate everyone should have a say as it will have an impact on them, therfore not voting should be illegal offence.

if it was illegal to not vote then the police would have more jobs and taxes would have to rise in order to fund it though..

i do agree with you though :)

Posted: 18-04-12 20:28 by Rayanne :)

yeah i can live with that

Posted: 18-04-12 20:29 by Gabby Tracey

live with higher taxes? theyre high as they are though! Britain has the highest tax rates i think..

Posted: 18-04-12 20:31 by Rayanne :)

we need to have accountants running the country!

Posted: 18-04-12 21:08 by Rayanne :)

i disagree with this since people might not be voting for religious reasons ...

well people will religious views have to be interviewed to make sure they are that religion and that they arent just making it up

Posted: 19-04-12 15:40 by Gabby Tracey

how do you tell through interview if some is making it up, because some people might be following a certain religion just by name. e.g. I believe in Islam, but I may not practise it. Those people who do not practise their religion but are just by name, well obviously not have much knowledge about their religion but that doesn't mean they are making it up.

I think people should have the legal right to abstain from voting. If you don't agree with any of the ideologies of the candidates, why should you be forced to vote for someone? I do think more people should vote, but because they want to, not because they have to.

Also, I'm Muslim too but I have never heard anything about Muslims not being allowed to vote so could you please expand on that? I don't think that's correct...
