Is there a force of attraction or repulsion when a magnet is held near an unmagnetised iron bar?

I think so, there should be a force of attraction whether or not iron is magnetised as iron is still a magnetic substance. When you say unmagnetised you probably meant iron as a soft magnet, iron can only be a hard magnetic when it is in its steel form or mixed with other hard materials or an electromagnet (so it can be easily demagnetised). But whether its a permanent magnet or temporary magnet doesn't make any difference, it is still a substance that responds to magnetic fields as well as copper, nickle and cobalt.
