it is difficult but you just need to be prepared to work hard. If you don't enojy it, and therefore won't have the motivation TO work hard i wouldn't bother as it is A LOT of work. However, what you learn is interesting and makes you look at literature in a different light , so if you're into that sort of this i would take. I don't know if that helps....

if you are not into reading literature books such as Jane Eyre, Withering Heights, Great expectations and so on then i would not suggest you choosing English Literature becuase i like reading but not books like those i have listed so i have trapped my self into doing English literature and had not enjoyed took me a lot of time to get the grasp of it and this position is not something you would want to be in as you will fall back with the work you have to do at a more present time :)
Essay skills are essential. If you've got a good track record you should be fine but it really isn't a subject you can get by on with no effort. Definitely a subject that you need an interest in. Especially when it comes to annotating 3,000 word poems :'(
