Ion exchange columns/resins?

Please can someone explain to me how this works

I think the column has sodium ions in it, and when water flows through it, the calcium ions in hard water is swapped with the sodium ions in the column. After a while, these columns need to be regenerated by pouring salt solution in, which will flush out all the calcium ions and replace em with sodium ions so we can do it all again :')
