How seat belts reduce the forces on the driver during the impact in an accident?

if you use the equation FORCE ACTING(N)=CHANGE IN MOMENTUM(KG M/S)/TIME TAKEN FOR CHANGING TO HAPPEN(S)                  seat belts increases the time taken. this reduces the forces acting on the chest

this is correct, seat belts bacically increase the time for you to come to a stop, this therefore allows less force/energy to act on you as it is spread over a greater time.
