On the AQA English AS exam Section B requires to write an essay like response on either language and power or language and gender (they provide the question). How do you achieve the structure?

With the social context question they look at how much understanding of the context of the topic you show. As well as the language frameworks (discourse, grammar, semantics, pragmatics, lexis, graphology, phonology), you should look at the social frameworks, such as:

Situation - where and when.

Who - identity, status, role or position.

Relationships - relative status, power and attitudes.

Intentions - purposes which writers/speakers bring to context.

Which would you say is your strong social context? (power or gender?) - like what do you know more about? Consider any theory that you know. Just a little tip, I would revise a little more on discourse as your texts could either be transcripts of some interaction or a piece of text - but it has an aspect of discourse - whether it is a structured formal text or a transcript which will have discourse features... you can identify whether it's spoken or written...

hope that's helped, if you need any more help just ask :)
