How do the candle-buds symbolise hidden dangers/fear in lord of the Flies?

The fact that they are closed could suggest that they are hiding or concealing something, similarly to the way in which Jack's hunters wear masks and facepaint to hide their faces. The masks could represent fear of the unkniown, which is also a key reason for the boys' fear of the beast.
